Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon court with replay technology

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in implementing replay technology.

Video review technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon this year.

Competitors are granted the option to contest specific calls made by the chair umpire, echoing the protocol already in place at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

The new system is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step arrives only a season following the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which effectively ended the longstanding role of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to review other decisions, including:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Possible interference end of a point.

Importantly, there is no cap on the amount of reviews a competitor can ask for.

Case in Point

A recent incident occurred in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a tough situation for the umpire, but believed his rival had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire watched a video and determined Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system in place at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

A further innovation at Wimbledon this year involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where fans have occasionally been uncertain if a shot was out or in.

In other news, with precisely 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
