On his first day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “transform” America's largest city, promising “a fresh chapter” and an bold beginning to his administration.

A Groundbreaking Leader

The 34-year-old political star, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.

“A time such as this comes rarely and even more uncommon is it that the public whose hold the levers of change,” Mamdani stated.

Ignoring suggestions to temper hopes, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will govern expansively and audaciously.”

Steering by Democratic Socialist Principles

Mamdani explicitly affirmed his socialist politics. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will govern as one. I will not abandon my principles for fear of being called radical,” he proclaimed to rapturous applause.

The ceremony was a dual event, beginning with a late-night oath-taking in a old subway station. He was formally sworn in on the steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's ascent as a victory over the status quo.

An Ambitious Policy Agenda

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a platform featuring:

• Free childcare
• No-cost bus transit
• A halt to rent increases for about 1 million households
• A experiment of municipally-operated grocery stores

The projected $10 billion cost of these programs may pose a hurdle to finance. Mamdani has pledged to increase levies for the wealthiest New Yorkers and big business. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing Political Challenges

The new mayor will deal with apprehension from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past comments regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a senior aide resigned over controversial past comments.

Mamdani has moved to ease these concerns by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, preventing the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “socialist” and warned of withholding government money. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was reportedly surprisingly friendly.

The Fundamental Tests of Leadership

Traditionally, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in delivering basic services: sanitation, curbing the rat infestation, repairing roadways, and ensuring smooth transit service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his administration's anti-crime efforts, citing record low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with murders recorded.

As his administration begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a quirky piece of advice about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his speech with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
